Memories of World War II
THE STORY OF A TIOGA COUNTY SOLDIER
Harold and Hazel Plank at Pointe du Hoc
April 2023
Introduction
Many lasting memories were made at Harold and Hazel Plank’s farm in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. For their grandchildren, the farm was a place of adventure — long summer days spent exploring the woods, walking the trails, visiting the fish pond, and wandering past the grave of an American Civil War soldier resting in one of the fields.
Yet beyond the beauty of the countryside and the old farmhouse was something even more meaningful: the warmth of a husband and wife who loved their family, their faith, and the life they had built together. As children, the grandchildren naturally saw those years as peaceful and happy ones. Only later did they come to understand the hardships and sacrifices that had shaped the family’s story.
Although many wartime experiences remained difficult for Harold to discuss, he eventually recorded portions of his memories so they would not be lost to future generations. The pages that follow are drawn from Harold’s own recollections and experiences, preserved by his family as a lasting record of one soldier’s journey through war and the life he built afterward.
